Dish Network has added local High-Definition channels in the Ft. Myers/Naples, Florida area.
The satcaster says is now offers local HD in 58 markets, representing more than 66 percent of U.S. TV households.
Dish did not reveal which local channels were added in the new Florida market. Satellite and cable TV services sometimes do not offer all major broadcast networks in local high-def due to carriage disputes with the local affiliates.
Dish Network, which now has roughly 80 national HD channels, plans to offer 100 national HD channels and local HD channels in 100 markets by year's end. However, the satcaster's first of three satellites to expand its HD capacity has failed to reach its orbit; two more satellites are scheduled this year.
Best Buy has started carrying Vudu's Video on Demand set-top at select stores across the country. That's according to an article by Video Business. The Vudu set-top, which retails for $295, enables users to download movies over a high-speed Internet connection. The box, which can store 100 movies, includes both standard-def and HDTV films. Vudu says up to 6,000 movies and TV shows are available for download. Until now, Vudu was available only at the company's web site and select ecommerce sites such as Amazon.com. But Video Business reports that two dozen Best Buy stores in California are now offering the set-top. Vudu is in competition with some industry heavyweights such as Apple and TiVo for the new Net TV audience and retail presence at stores such as Best Buy is considered crucial to the company's
